Later Jackie’s Kenneth Jay Lane faux pearl necklace would go for $211,500 at the Sotheby’s auction. During her years in the White House, in addition to her perfect suits from Cassini and Halston’s hats, Jackie had revealed another upper-class secret of America: Jean Schlumberger. Schlumberger created the most famous and beautiful jewelry in the world, worn by his friends Countess Bismark, Gloria Guiness and the duchess of Windsor. Since 1956 Schlumberger worked in the salon of Tiffany. The Schlumberger brooch called the "two fruit clip", a cluster of two strawberries made of rubies with stems and leaves of diamonds, was chosen by John F. Kennedy for Jackie as a present for their first Christmas in the White House. Jackie often wore this "berry brooch," as she called it.
The famous Berry Brooch
Schlumberger’s gold and enamel bracelets were worn by Jackie so frequently in the mid-1960s that the press called them "Jackie bracelets." His white enamel and gold "banana" earrings also became her favorites.
Schlumberger was perfect for Jackie’s taste: exquisite, costly and not widely used.
Jewelry of Van Cleef & Arpels became Jackie’s favorite when she became Mrs. Onassis. But it was also her sentimental favorite, since Jackie’s wedding ring from JFK also came from Van Cleef & Arpels.
