Jane Fonda, actress, writer, entrepreneur,
activist

In 1978, Jane Fonda fractrured her foot while filming "The China Syndrome." It became impossible for her to continue practicing ballet, which had used to be her favorite way to stay fit. She started looking for alternatives, and soon began participating in a class under direction of Leni Gazden.

The Jane Fonda workout was not what later became famous as aerobics. While aerobics was known as exercise for burning calories and strengthening heart, the workout was airmed at strengthening and toning muscles through the combination of repetitive movements. The workout included some elements of ballet and was accompanied with a nice choice of music, which made it even more attractive. Jane Fonda loved this form of fitness so much that she hated to miss even a day of it.

By then, Fonda had stopped with her food addictions. She realized how deep is woman’s body and mind are effected by exercise. It did not take her long to come to an idea of founding exercise business together with Leni Gazden. It was called "Jane and Leni’s Workout." In the beginning stage, Jane was often teaching classes herself, which she believed was important for understanding what really worked.

In 1981, Jane Fonda wrote her first book "Jane Fonda’s Workout Book." It became a number 1 on The New York Times Bestseller List. After a lot of research, came another book called "Women Coming of Age", which also became a best-seller.

Later, Fonda met Stuart Karl, the father of "how-to" home videos, who offered to make a video of the workout. At that time Fonda knew noone who had ever bought a videotape. Even though she initially said "no", Jane would eventually decide otherwise. Still, she could never imagine the scale of success and impact on people, this video would make.

The first video, the original "Jane Fonda Workout" remained one of the most best-selling videos ever. Due to the popularity of this video, the video industry started blooming. Jane Fonda became the first person in the "Talent" category to have been inducted into the Video Hall of Fame.

The impact this video made on people, was enormous. People felt the impact of it in their personal lives and reacted to Jane Fonda a to someone they knew.

"Working out can mean different things depending on where a person is at a given time in her life. Working out can be narrowly about armoring ourselves in muscle or about striving for toxic, elusive perfection. But is can also, for a more conscious person, be about breathing energy and life into the core of the body, building chi, communicating on a deep level with your cells… I know now that, for me, the moving to the music, the endorphins, the sweating, led me into the long, slow process of accepting my own body."
Jane Fonda. "My Life So Far"
