The founder of The Body Shop, Anita Roddick is known as an entrepreneur with principles. She did not try to adapt them in order to succeed. On the contrary. Her business was founded as a business unusual, business designed to make a difference.

In contradiction to the common opinion about the famous entrepreneurs, Anita Roddick had never had a goal about making millions of dollars. Furthermore, she was also convinced, that the greatest entrepreneurs had never been money driven. It is their vision and their desire to make it come true, that bring them to the top.

Anita Roddick was often asked to talk about entrepreneurship, something she was convinced, you cannot learn at business school.

What qualities do you have to possess to be a successful entrepreneur?

According to Anita Roddick, you have to be and outsider, a person who does not go with a mainstream. You have to have a vision, ideas, optimism and a certain degree of craziness. According to Roddick, the understanding that skills and money are not the criteria for a successful entrepreneur, is important. You do not have to know how to do something.

The Body Shop and Anita Roddick – Attitude to Beauty

"If the beauty industry makes us celebrate products supposed to change what women look like, rather than celebrating what women have done, then society becomes shallow. There’s such a poverty of praise in our society towards women already: they are not taught they are remarkable."
– Anita Roddick

Anita Roddick did not follow the path of other cosmetic companies. Her concept of the Body Shop was based on her personal conviction, her view of life and her idea to make the world a better place. The Body Shop products presented in simple packaging, promote health rather than rejuvenation. According to Anita Roddick, the moisturizer is the only valid skincare product, because it does prevent loss of moisture in the skin. However, even the moisturizer would not make you look younger. According to Roddick, giving honest information to customers is an essential part of being a socially responsible company.

What is a beauty, according to Anita Roddick?

"It’t all about character and curiosity and imagination and humor – in short, it’s an active, outward expression of everything you like about yourself."
